Common Couch
Scientific Name:
Cynodon dactylon
What is Common Couch?
Common couch is a warm season perennial grass with fine textured, smooth leaves which vary from grey-green to blue-green in colour. Possesses a membranous ligule fringed with hairs with a folded venation. Common Couch has a strong rhizomateous growth habit making it both a desirable turf-type species as well as a vigorous weed when growing where it is not wanted. It tolerates low height of cut, often occurring as a weed in cool season golf greens where control can be difficult to achieve. The inflorescence consists of three to nine spikes radiating from a central point, with seeds forming from summer through early autumn. Common Couch is propagated by seed or from stolons and rhizomes.
