Spiio™ Soil Sensor – Precision, Hyperlocal Soil Intelligence for Professional Turf & Landscape Management
The Spiio™ Soil Data Measurement System, now delivered through Nuturf’s partnership with Syngenta, is a cutting-edge, subscription-based agronomy platform that provides automatic, hyperlocal soil insights without any manual data collection. With wireless, in-ground cellular sensors sending hourly updates directly to the cloud, Spiio™ empowers turf managers, golf course superintendents, sports turf professionals, and landscape managers with real-time data to make faster, more informed decisions.
Spiio’s wireless sensor is built to last 20+ years in the ground. It is innovated and crafted with over five years of rigorous testing in order to become the most durable wireless sensor technology ever on the market.
What Is the Spiio™ System?
Spiio™ is a complete end-to-end soil monitoring solution combining cellular in-ground sensors with a cloud-based dashboard and mobile app. It replaces manual soil logging by delivering live measurements of:
- Temperature
- Volumetric soil moisture
- Soil salinity (EC/TDS)
- Light volume
All data is reported hourly, automatically uploaded, and accessible from any mobile or desktop device. With unlimited user logins, your entire team can view insights, set thresholds, and track trends across key areas of your property.
Spiio™ Sensor Features & Technical Specifications
The Spiio™ Sensor is engineered for reliable, long-term performance in professional turf environments. Its Core Measurement Capabilities include:
- Temperature Sensor: Measures from –20°C to 70°C, allowing accurate monitoring year-round using an integrated chip (IC)
- Moisture Sensor: Capacitive sensor calibrated for volumetric water content (%), ideal for managing irrigation, rootzone moisture, and drainage performance.
- Salinity Sensor: Displays soil electrical conductivity in dS/m, mS/cm, or TDS, essential for tracking salt accumulation and planning mitigation strategies using a resistive sensor.
- Light Sensor: When installed with the top exposed, captures light volume data to help evaluate shade patterns or redesign projects using a resistive sensor.
Physical & Operational Advantages
- Compact Design: Measures 180mm × 47mm × 48mm for easy installation.
- Long Battery Life: 3–5 years under recommended use.
- Flexible Installation Depth: Sensors are buried in-ground at the depth you want to monitor.
- Easy Relocation: Move sensors seasonally to compare drainage, shade, or soil conditions across different locations.
- Powered by a Lithium battery (Li-SOCl2) with 13,500mAh capacity
- Weight: 250g per sensor
How Spiio™ Works
Multiple Sensors, One Wireless System
Spiio™ uses multiple wireless cellular sensors that feed data directly to a cloud-based dashboard—no base stations, repeaters, wires, or infrastructure required. Each sensor is activated in minutes using a mobile phone.
The Spiio™ App & Dashboard
From any device, users can:
- View real-time soil conditions
- Track daily, weekly, or monthly trends
- Create and export custom reports
- Build dashboards tailored to your operations
- Set custom alerts and environmental thresholds
- Monitor conditions across the entire site or compare individual sensor zones
What You Can Do with Spiio™
The Spiio™ system provides actionable insights to help you:
- Monitor Daily Rootzone Moisture: Evaluate drainage rates, project moisture levels, and confirm irrigation or rainfall events.
- Anticipate Soil Temperature Thresholds: Set thresholds for key agronomic events such as cultivation timing or product applications.
- Track Salt Accumulation Over Time: Compare salt levels across soils and plan mitigation strategies effectively.
- Compare Light Volume Across Locations: Audit shade, plan pruning, or evaluate redesign opportunities using real-time light data.
How Many Sensors Do You Need?
The number of sensors depends on how many zones or specific areas you want to monitor.
It is recommended to install 5 Spiio™ Sensors as a base starting point, with the option to add as many as required for comprehensive, site-wide visibility.
Easy, Infrastructure-Free Installation
No additional technology setup is required; no wiring, hubs, or repeaters. All you need is a:
- Mobile phone
- Computer with internet access
Sensors are cellular-connected and activate through your phone in minutes. Nuturf and Syngenta provide installation instructions, videos, and live support to ensure a smooth setup.
Subscription-Based System
Spiio™ is sold as an annual subscription, priced according to the number of activated sensors. The subscription includes:
- Physical Spiio™ Sensors
- Dashboard and mobile app access
- Unlimited users per account
- Ongoing data reporting and cloud storage
The Future of Turf & Soil Management
With real-time environmental feedback, automated reporting, and event-driven alerts, the Spiio™ Sensor allows turf professionals to make proactive decisions backed by accurate, hyperlocal soil data. Whether managing greens, fairways, sports fields, garden beds, or landscaped spaces, Spiio™ delivers the clarity you need to stay ahead of environmental change.
